Work from tenth grade Color Theory Class with Mr. Leclair

Reflection

In my process to create my inverted landscape I began by finding a lovely image of a stream that my cousin had taken. On arts night, I created the outline of the entire piece, which took about two hours. At the very next class we had I officially began to color my 18x24 piece by using oil pastels. The only colors allowed were blue, red, orange, green, yellow and purple. Actually inverting the photograph was rather easy with the help of the color charts that we made. The entire process took me around a month to complete, yet I am still able to find things that I can change.

At the critique I was lucky enough to receive reviews from my peers. Kenzie Haverkamp enjoyed I used different textures in my piece. Another student liked how I depicted my stream. Personally, I find the rocks in my piece to be most successful. Particularly those along the left hand side and the one smack in the middle.

As work time progressed this artwork became more challenging for me. I became rather angry at my piece and had a hard time with working on it. Oil pastels are not a friendly media. Caitlin Christy agreed with me about the lack of dark tones, as did Mr. Leclair. I find it hard to make my art dark, even though I ironically love dark art work.

This piece has helped me get closer to my artistic goal. I love doing character work, but I can’t make a job out of it if I have no where for my characters to live. Creating landscapes is something that I need to practice and this project was definitely good practice. Working more with different media is also good for me. I need to become more diverse.
