11th Grade Arts Night Reflection

Beacon’s class of 2014 made it to our eleventh grade Arts Night. As a visual student, at this point in time I was finishing up a painting class and beginning clay manipulation. With no ceramic pieces ready to be seen, we were required to showcase five pieces of work. Unlike prior years, we had a bit more room as to what we would hang. Some restrictions were still in place, however, we were able to choose four pieces we were happy with showcasing, as well as one at home project. After creating a short artist bio explaining why we love to make art, we began the gallery process. In my own part of the hallway, I hung a surrealist piece, an analytical cubism piece, a self-portrait,  an impressionistic piece and my personal project. Later, on the evening of Arts Night, my fellow artists and I stood by our work as friends and family viewed our work and growth.

I've never enjoyed Arts Night. It’s not that verbal interaction is a visual artists worse nightmare, it is mine alone. As an extreme perfectionist I criticize all of my work, and expect others to do so as well. The people who spoke to me about my work were fiercely positive and kind. Of course, we all love to hear positivity. However, I dislike verbally sharing my opinion. I’d prefer if people were to visually see my work, and just think about it. The general process of preparation is always clean and quick. Also, from what I've heard, the night ended well for all of us. However, I am an introvert who dislikes speaking. I hope that this may change by our senior Arts Night.

Arts Night continually tries to teach me positivity. It has taught me the importance of deadlines and eye contact. Yes, it has also even helped me grow as an artist.  I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited for the next and final Arts Night. As a senior, I will be able to put whatever I desire up. If I were to change anything about Arts Night, it would be the required talking. I do, highly, appreciate all of the beautiful comments towards my work, and they make me very humble as a person. I do support Arts Night as a requirement. Without it, it is quite possible that I wouldn't be where I am as an individual, today.

Work from tenth grade Figure Drawing Class

In Ms. Moseley’s figure drawing class we did a project entitled, ‘Skinless Self Portrait’. First, we obtained a photo of ourselves which showed our faces and went to our shoulder level. After doing so, we did a full value sketch of the photo in our sketch books. Upon being checked we received an 18x24 piece of white paper and a photo of what muscles are under the skin on our faces. On this paper we had to draw ourselves again, only this time we had to draw it as though we no longer had skin and our muscles were showing. To do this I used several different kinds of pencil. The project was due November 10 and we were given around two weeks to complete it. I feel my strengths include the details I included in my piece while my weakness would be lack of proportions.
